Girls U11 Fury Premier takes home Championship honors

Our two U11 girls WAGS teams (Fury and Fury Premier) found success as finalists in Bronze and Gold divisions respectively in the preseason Amanda Post Memorial this year (2014).  These teams showed nice preseason composure and strength as they fought highly ranked teams from out of state.  These winning teams went on to play in the Maryland United Spring Break preseason tournaments the following weekend.  In that tournament, Fury Premier won every game decisively and took home Championship honors for Gold division.  Coach for these teams, Eric Jones, attributes their preseason success to solid winter training by John Camm and a winning spirit by some wonderful athletes.  They worked hard outdoors in a cold pre-season to get this.

Boys Under 17 Fever in State Cup Final once again!

The Severna Park Fever, a boys U17 team, completed its first season in the Region 1 Premier league, finishing tied for third place with a 3-2-2 record.  The Fever’s last game was this past Saturday at Kinder Park on the Upper Bermuda field.  The fever played Kirkwood Soccer Academy United, from Delaware, who are ranked #11 in the US.  The Fever pulled out a hard fought 1-0 victory in the game, with a goal from Daniel Kwon off of an assist from Michael Heitzmann.  Paul Shorkey and Justin Snyder combined for a shutout.  Fever’s third place finish automatically qualifies them for Region 1 Premier league play next Spring.

Background on Region I Premier:  The Region I Premier League is for the top sixteen teams throughout the Region (Virginia to Maine) in the U17  age group, and consists mainly of state Cup winners and runners up in the Region. The competition is designed to allow the very best teams in Region I to play each other in a league format. With only sixteen positions available in any age group throughout the Region, entry into the league is competitive. Each year, selection of the 16 teams becomes more difficult. There is a promotion/relegation system to assure that the best 16 teams are selected for the league.

The Fever also advanced to their second straight State Cup Final on Sunday, beating ASA 3-2.  Goals were scored by Ryan Gruss (2) and Michael Heitzmann, with assists by Evan Monseu and Michael Heitzmann.  This marks the third consecutive year the Fever has advanced to the State Cup Semi-finals.

The Fever will play in the State Cup Final on May 4 at the Maryland SoccerPlex's stadium field at 2:30 pm.  The Fever are defending their State Cup title in a rematch against Montgomery Soccer Club's Magic Green.  All Green Hornets and Severna Park Soccer enthusiasts are invited to attend.

The Fall 2013 Gunners squad includes Adam, Alex,  C-Max, Cam, Cullen,  George, Griffin, Jack,  Liam, Luke, Mason, Max, Michael, Sam, Tyler, and Will.

Coach Dunoyer says "You played with a lot of HEART all season long, and in spite of a tough win-loss record, you maintained outstanding sportsmanship throughout.  Remember “Sportsmanship” does not only mean conducting yourself like a gentleman on the field.  It also means maintaining a tough competitive attitude throughout each and every game, all the way to the final whistle, thereby demonstrating respect for the sport of soccer. It means NOT GIVING UP. More than once referees commented to me, post-game, on what a tough fight you put up out there on the field; I could not be more proud of this squad."

On Sunday May 19th, 2013 on the stadium field of the Maryland SoccerPlex, our BU16A Fever defeated the MSC Magic Green 2-0 to win the Maryland State Cup.

The Fever staff is comprised of head coach Paul Kowalewski and his assistant coaches Matt Arridlt and Wayne Gruss, keeper coach Johan De Vicq, Dave Vincent as Fitness Trainer, and Manager Terri Kowalewski and Scott Hennen as Tournament Coordinator.

The staff were very familiar with their outstanding Region 1 Premier League opponent, and devised a strategy and tactics that the players executed perfectly. Part-way through the first half, the Fever changed from their traditional 4-4-2 to a more offensively aggressive 4-3-3, and it paid dividends almost immediately.

Goals were by Josh Ridgley and Ryan Gruss, and assists were by Daniel Kwon and Chase Greber.

The Fever controlled most of the possession, and the midfield, with outstanding play from Griffin Kowalewski, Chase Greber, Kieran Collien, and Connor Arrildt.

Strikers Daniel Kwon, Ryan Gruss, Josh Ridgley, Nic Crockett, Noah Beall, and Tony Renaldo challenged the MSC defense and produced both goals.

After building their 2-0 advantage and seeing how MSC was pressing to get back in the match, the coaches again changed the formation to a 4-5-1 so as to have better numbers in the midfield. As a result, the Fever were able to handle the pressure a very talented Magic Green put on them and secure the title.

Craig Wishart was in command in goal, and was supported by strong back line play from Evan Monseu, Joe Shuey, Justin Hennen, Chad Greber, and holding midfielder Garrett McLendon. Paul Shorkey is the Fever's other Goal keeper.

Shutout by Craig Wishart.

Congratulations to the players and coaches for such a significant accomplishment.
